2-in-1s once in the spotlight at CES 2017

Microsoft invented the 2-in-1 device category in 2012 with the Surface RT, and although at first not a lot of companies were interested in it, now everyone seems to be at least considering bringing such a product to the market.

As a key Microsoft partner, Dell just couldn’t stay away from this particular device category, and at this year’s CES, the company introduced its very own Surface killer.

The so-called Dell Latitude 5285 looks and works just like a Microsoft Surface, while also featuring hardware that makes it quite an alternative to Redmond’s original device.

For example, the new Dell 2-in-1 model comes with a 12.3-inch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio and is powered by a series of Intel 7-generation Core processors. The device also boasts an Intel HD Graphics 620 card, as well as up to 16GB DDR3 memory. In terms of storage, customers can choose up to 1TB SSD.

Versus the Microsoft Surface Pro 4

As compared to the Microsoft Surface, the Dell 5285 loses the battle when it comes to displays, as it supports only 1080p, while the Surface Pro 4 comes with a maximum resolution of 2736x1825 pixels.

On the other hand, it tries to compete with the Surface by offering the same screen aspect ratio, processors, and storage options, and despite the different resolution, Dell is asking the same price for its model.

The Latitude 5285 will go on sale in February starting at $899, which is the same price that Microsoft is asking for the Surface Pro 4 with Intel Core I5 processors. You’ll also have to spend extra for the keyboard, as it’s not included in the box, but more details, including pricing, will be unveiled at a later date.

In case you’re wondering, the Dell device also features the typical 2-in-1 features, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB 3.0, LTE, and a fingerprint sensor, while also boasting two different battery capacities, namely 31.5 WHr (6300 mAh) or 42 WHr (8400 mAh).
