The team behind the Debian Installer open-source project has announced earlier, May 21, 2016, the release and general availability of the sixth Alpha build of the installer for Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch."

As you might be aware, Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" is the next major version of the award-winning and highly acclaimed Debian GNU/Linux operating system, which is currently being developed under the Debian Testing umbrella, and the Debian Installer team is working very hard to bring in new features and technologies.

Therefore, Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" Installer Alpha 6 has been released. It's now available for public testing, allowing users to enable Debian Pure Blends, a solution for groups of people with specific needs, directly from the Software selection screen, as well as to install packages, which didn't work correctly in previous Alpha builds.

Linux kernel 4.5 is now supported

Among various other improvements implemented in the sixth Alpha build of the installer for the upcoming Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" operating system, we can mention support for Linux kernel 4.5, support for allowing users to select a given board when installing the OS on a multiboard system, and the ability to install the MATE desktop environment by default when using brltty and espeakup.

Furthermore, the installer now offers users support for the GNU/screen full-screen terminal multiplexer, adds better support for multiple IP addresses, fixes some problems reported by users with DASD (Direct-Access Storage Device) and LVM (Logical Volume Management) devices, and introduces a new component to let users activate and configure FCP (Fibre Channel Protocol) devices.

Last but not least, the hardware support saw great improvements in this new release of the Debian Installer, which lets users install the OS on Firefly-RK3288, BeagleBoard-X15, and Olimex A20-SOM-EVB platforms. A total of 75 languages are supported by Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" Installer Alpha 6, whose sources you can download right now via our website.
