Debian Project today announced the availability of the first point release of the Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" operating system, along with what it would appear to be the last maintenance update to the Debian GNU/Linux 8 "Jessie" series.

Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" was released a month ago, on June 17, 2017, and now it already received its first point release, Debian GNU/Linux 9.1, which mainly addresses some security flaws that have been released through the operating system's repositories, along with various other adjustments for pressing issues.

Same goes for the Debian GNU/Linux 8.9 "Jessie" release, and both will be available for download soon as new installation images for supported hardware architectures, as well as Live ISOs with select desktop environments for those who want to deploy Debian Stretch or Debian Jessie on new PCs without downloading hundreds of updates.

"Please note that the point release does not constitute a new version of Debian 9 but only updates some of the packages included. There is no need to throw away old "stretch" media. After installation, packages can be upgraded to the current versions using an up-to-date Debian mirror," reads today's announcement.

Debian GNU/Linux 9.1 contains 26 security updates, 54 miscellaneous bug fixes

In numbers, the Debian GNU/Linux 9.1 "Stretch" point release contains a total of 26 security updates and 54 miscellaneous bug fixes compared to the Debian GNU/Linux 9.0 images, and it also removes the aiccu package because it's now useless since the shutdown of SixXS.

On the other hand, the Debian GNU/Linux 8.9 "Jessie" maintenance update comes with no less than 68 security fixes and 53 miscellaneous bug fixes. Additionally, it removes eight packages compared to the previous release, namely Debian GNU/Linux 8.8, which was released two and a half months ago, on May 6, 2017.

It usually takes more than 24 hours for the new installation images to be made available to download, but existing Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" and Debian GNU/Linux 8 "Jessie" users can update their installations as we speak using the APT package manager or Synaptic Package Manager. We'll let you know as soon as the ISO images are out if you want to install either OS on new computers, or reinstall.

Update: As of July 23, 2017, installation and Live ISO images of Debian GNU/Linux 9.1 "Stretch" and Debian GNU/Linux 8.9 "Jessie" are available to download.
