The developers of the Debian-based SparkyLinux operating system have released today a new development build based on the Debian Testing (Buster) repositories and featuring full disk encryption.

Shipping a few days after the release of SparkyLinux 4.7 "Tyche" stable operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch," the SparkyLinux 5-dev20171120 development build includes up-to-date packages based on the repositories of the upcoming Debian GNU/Linux 10 "Buster" operating system.

Apart from rebasing the operating system on the latest Debian Testing repos as of November 20, 2017, the new SparkyLinux 5 development images are the first to enable full disk encryption by default in the Calamares graphical installer, as you can see from the screenshots attached at the end of the article.

"The most important change is about disk encryption. The Calamares installer has full disk encryption option enabled to be used during installation process," said the devs in today's announcement. "Please test it and report on our forums whatever you find."

MinimalGUI ISO now available for download

Full disk encryption is probably one of the most requested features these days, and it's been available in the Calamares universal installer framework for a while now. SparkyLinux devs have been working lately to also add full disk encryption support to their distro, and it looks like it may soon be available to an upcoming stable release.

If you want to help the SparkyLinux developers provide a working full disk encryption for all users, you can download the SparkyLinux 5-dev20171120 MinimalGUI live ISO image right now from the official website to test drive the full disk encryption, which will require you to sacrifice an entire disk drive, so make sure that it doesn't contain any important information.
