About a month after releasing the first Slax release in two years, developer Tomas Matejicek announced the availability of a beta version of the next major version of the GNU/Linux distribution, Slax 9.3.0.

Slax 9.3.0 beta is now ready for public testing with persistent support when using Slax from a USB flash drive, allowing you to preserve settings and downloaded files or packages across reboots. It also improves booting from EXT4 and NTFS filesystems.

Moreover, the default file manager, PCManFM, has been updated to display external drives in the left sidebar, newly installed applications are now automatically added to the xLunch screen, and Wicd is now the default network manager.

This release also ships with drivers for a wide range of wireless chips, as well as up-to-date components and the latest security patches from the upstream repositories of the recently released Debian GNU/Linux 9.3 "Stretch" operating system.

Final Slax 9.3 release expected in a week

According to the developer, the final Slax 9.3 release should be out in a week if everything goes well during the beta testing period and no major or critical issues are reported. However, the developer encourages users to thoroughly test this beta version.

"I am almost ready to release the next Slax version. But before I do so, I would like to get some feedback on the current progress," writes Tomas Matejicek in the release announcement. "If everything goes smoothly, we should have next Slax in a week."

Therefore, if you want to help with the testing, you can download Slax 9.3.0 beta right now through our website, write the ISO image on a USB flash drive, and install the OS on your personal computer. Both 32-bit and 64-bit installations are supported at this time, and you can send feedback here.
