To kick off the new year, the developers of the Debian-based siduction GNU/Linux distribution have announced the release and immediate availability of version 2017.1.0.

The last siduction release was version 2016.1 "Patience," launched on Christmas Eve last year, so it took the development team about two months to put together siduction 2017.1.0, which is the first one to be released in 2017. However, the operating system remains based on the Debian Unstable (a.k.a. Debian Sid) repositories.

There are many good news for siduction users in version 2017.1.0, starting with the fact that it comes with no less than nine flavors, with the KDE Plasma, GNOME, Xfce, LXDE, LXQt, Cinnamon, and MATE desktop environments, as well as with the Openbox/Fluxbox window managers or without any graphical server at all (noX).

siduction 2017.1.0 is powered by Linux kernel 4.10

The good news continues with the fact that siduction 2017.1.0 is powered by the recently released Linux 4.10 kernel, and the graphics stack was also updated and is now based on the latest X.Org Server 1.19.2 display server. Additionally, this release comes with the systemd 232 init system.

"The released images are a snapshot of Debian unstable, that also goes by the name of Sid, from 2017-05-03. They are enhanced with some useful packages and scripts, a brand new installer and a custom patched version of the linux-kernel 4.10, accompanied by X-Server 1.19.2-1 and systemd 232-19," reads today's announcement.

siduction's default graphical installer was also replaced with the newest Calamares 3.1 series, making UEFI installs easier. However, the developers disabled full-disk encryption with LUKS in this release as they didn't have the time to test it fully so that it could be enabled by default in the next ISO snapshots of the distribution.

It also looks like the siduction 2017.1.0 release comes with some bad news as the 32-bit support is no longer available. Therefore, the siduction 2017.1.0 ISO images are designed to work only on 64-bit computers, and you can download them right now from our website or the distro's homepage. If you need 32-bit support, contact the developers.
