Binary Emotions released a new update of their Debian-based Raspberry Digital Signage operating system with support for the new  $35 Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ single-board computer.

Raspberry Digital Signage is an open-source digital signage operating system based on the Linux kernel and using Debian's package management system. It's a free digital signage solution designed specifically for the tiny Raspberry Pi computers, which are ideal for displaying a full-screen web browser in public areas.

Coming fifth months after the release of Raspberry Digital Signage 10.0, which was the first version to be rebased on the Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch" operating system series, Raspberry Digital Signage 11.2 adds support for Raspberry Pi Foundation's Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ single-board computer launched last month on Pi Day.

The Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ SBC comes with a 1.4GHz 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor, dual-band 802.11ac wireless LAN, Bluetooth 4.2 LE, Gigabit Ethernet over USB 2.0, Power-over-Ethernet support, better PXE network support, USB mass-storage booting, and improved thermal management.

SysV replaced with systemd

Apart from offering compatibility with the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ SBC, the Raspberry Digital Signage 11.2 release is based on the latest Chromium web browser, which is the most important component of this browser-face operating system, addresses an issue the MAC address at URL’s end feature, and the internal WordPress site viewability.

Another interesting change is the replacement of the older SysV init script with a more modern systemd unit file for launching the digital signage stack, which required some underlying modifications to the code. You can download Raspberry Digital Signage 11.2 right now through our web portal or from the official website of the project, where you'll find details on how to use it on your Raspberry Pi.
