The development team behind the Debian-based antiX MX GNU/Linux distribution was pleased to announce the final release of antiX MX-16 "Metamorphosis."

Based on the latest stable Debian release, namely Debian GNU/Linux 8.6 "Jessie," the antiX MX-16 operating system is a major release that comes approximately one year after the previous version, antiX MX-15, and promises to offer users a collection of the latest and greatest GNU/Linux technologies and Open Source software applications.

"Built on the reliable and stable Debian Jessie (8.6) base with extra enhancements from the antiX live system, it also comes with numerous up to date applications provided by the MX Linux packagers. Just like previous versions of MX, this release defaults to sysVinit," reads the announcement on the distro's website.

Here's what's new in antiX MX-16

Built around the lightweight Xfce 4.12.2 desktop environment, antiX MX-16 includes Linux kernel 4.7.8 for the 64-bit edition and Linux kernel 3.16 LTS (PAE or non-PAE) for the 32-bit flavor, which is recommended for deployment on computers from 10 years ago as the 64-bit one is designed for modern hardware.

antiX MX stays true to its vision of not using the systemd init system and MX-16 defaults to SysVinit. The Package Installer has been improved to allow users to easily upgrade or downgrade their installations, most of the included Broadcom drivers are now automatically enabled, and the 64-bit edition ships with UEFI support.

As for the open-source software apps pre-installed, antiX MX-16 ships with Mozilla Firefox 50.0.2, VLC Media Player 2.2.4, Clementine 1.3.1, Mozilla Thunderbird 45.5.1, LibreOffice 5.2.2, LuckyBackup 0.4.8, Seahorse 3.14.0, Xfce4 Terminal 0.6.2, as well as a bunch of in-house built tools.
