Debian developer Daniel Lange announced today that the host city of the next Debian conference, DebConf18, will be Hsinchu, a city in northern Taiwan located southwest of Taipei.

While the developers and engineers behind the very popular Debian GNU/Linux operating system are currently preparing for DebConf17, which will take place in Montréal, Canada, between August 6-12, 2017, it looks like they've already decided which will be the next host city, but no official dates were set for the upcoming event.

"We just concluded the decision meeting and have chosen the Hsinchu, Taiwan, team for hosting DebConf18," said Daniel Lange in a mailing list announcement. "Please check their bid page at https://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf18/Bids/Hsinchu to get into the mood for our first DebConf in Asia. But do come around Montréal this year first."

DebConf19 could be hosted in Curitiba, Brazil

It would appear that Hsinchu and Curitiba were both very strong candidates as host city for DebConf18, but the developers decided to choose the former over the latter because this would be the first time when the annual Debian conference will take place in Asia. However, Curitiba, Brazil remains a tough contender for DebConf19.

DebConf is an important event for all those who are maintaining or contributing code to Debian GNU/Linux. It's the main Debian event of the year, designed to gather together new and existing Debian developers from all corners of the world to share their knowledge and discuss the future of the widely-used GNU/Linux distribution.

More details about DebConf18 will be provided by the Debian developers during the coming months, as the conference should take place sometime in summer 2018. In the meantime, don't forget to check out all the details you need to know about attending this year's DebConf17 event at https://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf17.
