The developers behind the open-source and cross-platform darktable photography workflow application and RAW image editor are hard at work these days to prepare the final release of the major darktable 2.2 series.

It's been only two weeks since our initial report on the upcoming darktable 2.2 release, so we recommend that you read that article first to get yourself familiar with the upcoming new features and improvements, which we have to admit that are overwhelming.

darktable 2.2 Release Candidate 1 (RC1) has been released on November 23, 2016, adding a bunch of fixes and improvements since the RC0 development snapshot. Most importantly, this new RC introduces support for reading 4-year-old XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) files.

"We're proud to announce the second release candidate of darktable 2.2.0, with some fixes over the previous release candidate. the most important one might be bringing back read support for very old xmp files (~4 years)," reads today's release announcement. "As always, please don't use the tarball autogenerated by github, but only our .tar.xz."

darktable 2.2 should be out next month with over 2,000 changes
