The developers behind darktable, an open-source and cross-platform RAW image editor designed for GNU/Linux operating systems, as well as various UNIX-like platforms, such as BSD and Mac OS X, are very proud to announce the release and immediate availability for download of darktable 2.0.

According to the release notes, which we've attached at the end of the article for reference, darktable 2.0 is a massive release that brings a huge number of changes, support for new digital cameras, and many other interesting goodies. However, the most important change of all is that darktable has been ported to GTK3.

"We're proud to finally announce the new feature release of darktable, 2.0!" reads today's announcement. "When updating from the currently stable 1.6.x series, please bear in mind that your edits will be preserved during this process, but it will not be possible to downgrade from 2.0 to 1.6.x any more."

Prominent features of darktable 2.0 include a new print mode, PDF export, upscaled exporting, the implementation of a Trash/Delete feature, the addition of a new "mode" parameter in the Export panel, which can be used to fine-tune the application of styles before exporting them, and revamped screen color management.

The graphical user interface has received several enhancements, such as better HiDPI support, dynamically sized viewport in the darkroom mode, keyboard navigation for lighttable and brush size, opacity and hardness, improved Facebook login, and GPS altitude support for images.

New digital cameras are now supported

In addition to the changes mentioned above, darktable 2.0 adds support for numerous new digital cameras, among which we can mention Canon PowerShot G5 X, Olympus SP320, Panasonic DMC-FZ150 (3:2), Panasonic DMC-FZ70 (1:1, 3:2, 16:9), Panasonic DMC-FZ72 (1:1, 3:2, 16:9), Panasonic DMC-GF7 (1:1, 3:2, 16:9), Panasonic DMC-GX8 (4:3), Panasonic DMC-LF1 (3:2, 16:9, 1:1), and Sony DSC-RX10M2.

Additionally, there are now new white balance presets for the Canon EOS M3, Canon EOS-1D Mark III, Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III, Canon PowerShot G1 X, Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II, Canon PowerShot G15, Canon PowerShot G16, Canon PowerShot G3 X, Canon PowerShot G5 X, Canon PowerShot S110, Panasonic DMC-GX8, Panasonic DMC-LF1, and Pentax *ist DL2 digital cameras.

Seveal Sony digital cameras, including Sony DSC-RX1, Sony DSC-RX10M2, Sony DSC-RX1R, Sony DSLR-A500, Sony DSLR-A580, Sony ILCE-3000, Sony ILCE-5000, Sony ILCE-5100, Sony ILCE-6000, Sony ILCE-7S, Sony ILCE-7SM2, Sony NEX-3N, Sony NEX-5T, Sony NEX-F3, Sony SLT-A33, and Sony SLT-A35, also have white balance presets support in darktable 2.0.

Last but not least, darktable 2.0 adds new noise profiles for the Canon EOS M3, Fujifilm X-E1, Fujifilm X30, Nikon Coolpix P7700, Olympus E-M10 Mark II, Olympus E-M5 Mark II, Olympus E-PL3, Panasonic DMC-GX8, Panasonic DMC-LF1, Pentax K-50, Sony DSC-RX1, Sony DSC-RX10M2, Sony ILCA-77M2, Sony ILCE-7M2, Sony ILCE-7RM2, and Sony SLT-A58 cameras.
