860 votes in the Feedback Hub and counting

A request for a dark version of Notepad is getting hundreds of votes in the Feedback Hub app, but there’s still no response from Microsoft on whether it has any plans to start work on such a project or not.

The first time we reported about this request to launch a dark version of Notepad was on January 30 when it had only 60 votes, but fast forward to February 13 and here we are with more than 860 votes and this suggestion growing in popularity at a really fast pace.

As you can see in the screenshot posted here, most of those who voted this request explain that Notepad continues to be a handy program, pointing out that even with so many text editors out there, this little app remains the better choice for simple tasks like writing a note or editing code.

Project Centennial could help

This is why there are users who believe that other features, such as code coloring, would also be neat additions, as this could bring Notepad in line with other more advanced editors out there.

“If Notepad could have a dark theme if the dark theme is enabled, that would be amazing. It should match the black background and white text of the current dark theme used across UWP apps and the default font should also be updated to match something like Segoe UI (which will also fit in with the themes to begin with),” one user explains.

Unfortunately, while Microsoft has indeed heard about this request to bring a dark version of Notepad to Windows 10 users, there’s still no confirmation that this is a project that they’re already working on.

A universal app version of Notepad could really make sense, especially given Redmond’s push for UWP, and the company shouldn’t spend too much time porting it given the Project Centennial bridge and set of tools that are also available to third-party developers.

We’ve contacted Microsoft to ask for more information about how the Windows team sees a dark version of Notepad and will update the article when an answer is provided.
