Google has just started rolling out Android 6.0 Marshmallow to its Nexus devices and some Android One models, so naturally the focus in the mobile world has shifted to the new build.

In the upcoming months, we expect more and more smartphones to be upgraded to Android 6.0. But what about devices running custom ROMs such as CyanogenMod?

Well, the good news is that CyanogenMod 13, which is based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, is already in the works (as seen on Reddit). We know this because the team working on CyanogenMod has started updating the relevant code on their public Gerrit repository.

Naturally, it will be a while until CyanogenMod 13 is ready for release, but it’s still good news to know that work on it has started. We’re pretty sure this piece of news will get a lot of people excited, even if we still have to wait a little longer before we can go ahead and try it out on our devices.

More Android 6.0-based ROMs are coming soon

Third-party ROMs are a great alternative for people who don’t want to wait for the official updates or have phones that are no longer supported. Case in point, the Nexus 4 (software update support dropped by Google) is getting unofficial Android 6.0 Marshmallow support via a custom ROM. Those who want to take advantage of an alternative software experience also enjoy the services of companies like Cyanogen.

The custom ROM maker has recently announced that another smartphone equipped with their tweaked version of Android will soon be made available on the market in India. The phone will be called Yutopia and will be manufactured by Cyanogen’s partner in the country, YU.

The handset is expected to arrive with a 5.2-inch display with 1080p or 2K panel (2,560 x 1,440 pixels) depending on the model you wish to purchase. Under the hood of the handset lies a Snapdragon 810 processor in combination with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. There is also a 3GB of RAM version.

Furthermore, Yutopia is expected to take advantage of a 21MP rear camera plus an 8MP front-facing one. The product will be released with Cyanogen OS 12.1 out of the box and will probably receive the update to Marshmallow at a later date.
