The startup says it has 50 million users

Cyanogen’s Adrian Begovic was present at the Seattle Code Rush conference last week, where he gave a speech in which he revealed that Cyanogen now has over 50 million users.

Basically, he said that’s more than the user base of the Windows Mobile and BlackBerry platforms combined (as spotted in a picture posted by the company on Instagram).

However, the statement above is pretty interpretable. For instance, it’s possible that Cyanogen might be referring strictly to Windows Mobile and not Windows Phone.

According to WMPU, the last 2 years of Windows Phone sales amount to around 70.5 million until Q2 2015. So Cyanogen might be providing some fake numbers here, just to boost its attractiveness in the users’ eyes.

On the other hand, Windows 10 Mobile (or Windows Mobile as Cyanogen calls it) is yet to be released to the public, so it’s quite puzzling what Cyanogen is referring to.

Is Cyanogen beefing up its own numbers?

There’s also a big question related to how Cyanogen is counting their user base. Is it taking into account installs or active users? We tend to lean towards the first scenario, as in this case, the numbers would lean favorably in the startup’s direction.

Those who want to try out CyanogenMod must manually download and install it on their smartphone. On the other hand, Cyanogen OS is a default version of Android that arrives pre-installed on several smartphone versions.

Still, these devices constitute a niche, as there aren’t yet so many Cyanogen OS models out there. But the startup is working on it and in a few months we’re probably going to see new devices bundled with this operating system.

Cyanogen is a well-known player in the world of mobile, especially when it comes to its intention of separating Android from Google as much as possible.

While Cyanogen incorporates tons of new features and modifications, it doesn’t alter the look and feel of the interface as much as other OEMs, so it is able to maintain the spirit of pure and light Android. That is why Cyanogen has managed to spark consumer interest to a very high extent.
