Apple announced earlier today that the fourth maintenance release of its popular open-source Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) 2.0 software and the first RC (Release Candidate) version of CUPS 2.1 are now available for download.

According to the release notes for CUPS 2.1 RC1, the software has received support for basic 3D printers based on the PWG White Paper policy and template, it fixes support for domain sockets on Linux systems, addresses some bugs in the handling for journald, and repairs signal handlers in USB and DNSSD backends.

Better support for the systemd init system and service manager has been added in the configure script, the autoconf sources have been updated to use the newer form of AC_INIT, and Limit All in Policy sections have now been applied to all operations when it's being used by itself.

Here's what's new in CUPS 2.0.4

On the other hand, the fourth maintenance release of CUPS 2.0 fixes ten issues reported by users since the previous version of the software. Among these, we can mention that a bug in cupsRasterWritePixels has been fixed, the redirection functionality in the web-based interface has been repaired, and an issue with RPM spec files has also been corrected.

Moreover, the IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) backend has been modified to respond to side-channel requests, the scheduler has been adjusted to start all pending jobs simultaneously, and the web search functionality will now search time-at-xxx values correctly.

Last but not least, the scheduler can now correctly start jobs during a cancel operation for multiple printing jobs. Processing of server overrides that don't have have port numbers has been fixed as well, along with various documentation changes.
