After being in development since the end of 2015, the CRUX 3.3 open-source Linux-based operating system has been released this past weekend, and it's now available for download.

Shipping with a multilib toolchain consisting of the Glibc (GNU C Library) 2.24, GNU Binutils 2.27, and GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) 6.3.0, CRUX 3.3 is powered by a kernel from the long-term supported and most advanced Linux 4.9 kernel branch, namely Linux kernel 4.9.6, and an updated graphics stack based on X.Org 7.7 and X.Org Server 1.19.1. Some important libraries have also been updated in CRUX 3.3.

"Important libraries have been updated to new major versions which are not ABI compatible with the old versions. We strongly advise against manually updating to CRUX 3.3 via ports, since these changes will temporarily break the system. Please note that there may still be packages that need updating that are not included in the ISO. These packages will need to be updated/rebuilt manually," explained Juergen Daubert in the release notes.

CRUX 3.2 users are urged to update at their earliest convenience

If you're using the CRUX 3.2 release or a previous one, the CRUX team recommends that you upgrade to CRUX 3.3 at your earliest convenience to enjoy all the latest GNU/Linux and Open Source technologies that have been included in the new release, but also to make sure that your operating system remains secure and reliable at all times.

Newcomers to this Linux-based operating system can download the CRUX 3.3 ISO image via our website or directly from the release announcement as a torrent, which contains an ISO-Hybrid image that can be written on a USB flash drive or a CD/DVD disc. The ISO comes with support for modern UEFI machines via efibootmgr, grub2-efi, and dosfstools.
