Corning Gorilla Glass is one of the most solid glass covers on flagship smartphones, mainly because it does a really good job of protecting the device from breakage. Now, Corning Incorporated has unveiled its latest such cover, namely Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

Corning Gorilla Glass is featured on multiple flagships, and it's definitely a must-have feature for any smartphone manufacturer who wishes to release a product that's durable and reliable.

The new Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is designed to provide additional protection against breakage usually occurring following multiple drops. The company has stated in a press release that lab tests have shown Gorilla Glass 5 survived drops up to four times better than rival glass designs.

Corning introduced Gorilla Glass 4 back in 2014, and the glass cover offered protection against phone drops from about a meter high. The new Gorilla Glass 5 is said to provide additional protection from waist and shoulder high drops.

Corning Gorilla Glass is featured on many flagship smartphones

Corning conducted a study recently and found that more than 85% of smartphone owners drop their devices at least once a year. About 55% have dropped their phones three or more times in the course of 12 months.

The study found that 60% of users dropped their phone from the shoulder and waist level, which would indicate that the handset slipped out of their hands while they were using the camera or took the device out of their pockets.

Corning goes on to say that the new glass cover will survive about 80% of the time when dropped from 1.6 meters on rough surfaces. Corning has become the leading manufacturer of glass covers in nearly 10 years since the start of the cover glass industry. Corning Gorilla Glass has been featured on more than 4.5 billion devices worldwide, out of which 1,800 product models across 40 major brands.

The company has announced that Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is commercially available and is expected to be featured on flagship smartphones that will be released later this year. We can only hope that among them will also be the Galaxy Note 7, set to unveil on August 2.
