A new version of the app is up for grabs

Classic Shell is one of the top apps out there that tried to make Windows 8’s desktop more familiar by bringing back the Start menu and despite the fact that Windows 10 too comes with such a feature, the developing team behind the program is working to add support for the new OS.

A new beta that was released today prepares for the big launch of Windows 10 next month, so in case you’re already running the Insider Preview of the operating system, this is the version of Classic Shell that you need to download.

Classic Shell 4.2.2 beta comes with improved support for Windows 10, the release notes reveal, which pretty much means that the app should run smoother in any preview build.

At the same time, it also adds some new skin features, including glass for Windows 10, so the Start menu should better fit the desktop of the new OS.

And last but not least, users now get the ability to save settings to XML files from command line, as well as multiple other minor improvements and bug fixes.

Lower interest in Start menu apps

Since Microsoft is bringing its very own Start menu in Windows 10, interest for apps that can do that is dropping, so there’s no doubt that popularity of this kind of software exploded after the debut of Windows 8.

Obviously, the big question is why someone should still use a third-party Start menu, and the answer comes most often from the feature lineup. Apps such as Classic Shell rely on the familiar look in Windows 7, without the live tiles introduced by Microsoft in Windows 10, so some upgraders might like this version more.

Needless to say, apps like this are still worth a try, so go ahead and download Classic Shell with Windows 10 support to see what it’s up to.
