Cities: Skylines, the hugely popular city management game from Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive, will receive news about an expansion, as well as future free and premium DLC, at Gamescom 2015 next month.

Cities: Skylines launched earlier this year, and by means of a huge word-of-mouth advertising campaign, the city management simulator won over hundreds of thousands of fans, thanks to its polished mechanics and the extensive support for mods.

Since then, thousands of modifications have been made by the community, while Colossal Order has released many different updates with improvements, enhancements, and, of course, bug fixes.

An expansion and more DLC are coming to Cities: Skylines

Now, while talking to TechRadar, the studio confirms that it's going to make at Gamescom 2015 a series of major announcements concerning Cities: Skylines. Among them is a full-fledged expansion but also different free and premium downloadable content that should enrich the actual experience.

Paradox and Colossal Order emphasized at launch that the DLC strategy for the game would be in line with other Paradox titles like Crusader Kings 2 or Europa Universalis IV, meaning a mix of big premium packs and smaller, free updates.

Colossal Order isn't planning a sequel just yet

One thing that the studio did emphasize is that a sequel for Cities: Skylines wouldn't launch anything soon, as the team wants to continue working on the current game, implementing new ideas, features, and suggestions from fans.

"I think the point where we have to move on to a sequel is when the technology is in such a state that it doesn't make any sense to continue working on Cities: Skylines. I'm hoping that will be some years in the future because there's so many ideas we want to add to the game before going there," studio boss Mariina Hallikainen explains.

As such, fans can expect to see plenty of new content for Cities: Skylines in the future, both free and paid.
