Clement Lefebvre, the leader and maintainer of the popular Linux Mint operating system, as well as the Cinnamon and MATE desktop environments, has sent his monthly report about the work done by the entire team.

According to Mr. Lefebvre, it would appear that we are very close to receiving the awesome Cinnamon 2.8 and MATE 1.12 desktop environments in our GNU/Linux distributions, including Linux Mint, of course. Both desktops should be unveiled by the week's end, if everything goes according to plan.

"We’re just a few days away from the releases of Cinnamon 2.8 and MATE 1.12. If everything goes according to plan, both desktop environments should be officially released by the end of the month," states Clement Lefebvre in the monthly Linux Mint report.

Most probably, you're now wondering what new features have been implemented in the Cinnamon 2.8 and MATE 1.12 desktop environment, so we want to remind you, guys, that we already reported on the massive Cinnamon 2.8 release last week, which Clement Lefebvre made available for Beta testing.

LMDE and Linux Mint 17.3 will ship with Cinnamon 2.8

On the other hand, the MATE 1.12 desktop environment includes features ported by the Linux Mint developers from the Cinnamon 2.8 desktop, numerous usability improvements, and fixes for some of the most annoying bugs reported by users since the previous release of the desktop, MATE 1.10.

For example, playing a video will not automatically stop the screensaver from being activated, the panel applets will no longer be reordered when changing the resolution, and the hardware support has been greatly improved, especially for touchpad devices and multi-monitor setups.

Best of all, the upcoming LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) and Linux Mint 17.3 (Rosa) operating system will ship with the Cinnamon 2.8 desktop environment by default. But until then, keep an eye on our Linux section for the official release of the Cinnamon 2.8 and MATE 1.12 desktop environments.
