The story of Linux Mint website being hacked and the forum database stolen is now behind the team of hard-working developers responsible for the Cinnamon and MATE desktop environments, and they can finally concentrate all of their efforts on improving these fantastic open-source projects.

The Cinnamon desktop environment has been updated earlier today, March 29, 2016, to version 2.8.8, a small maintenance release that landed in the main software repositories of the Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" operating system, which is the latest stable release of the Ubuntu-based GNU/Linux distribution.

According to the GitHub changelog, it appears that only a single issue has been resolved, the code used for the interaction with the screensaver got removed from the layout.js file, as it was always broken, despite developers' efforts to fix it in the previous maintenance releases.

"Remove code for interaction with the screensaver. It was always broken until 2.8.7, where I 'fixed' it, and has caused some reported regression where the panels will be hidden after returning from the screensaver," said Michael Webster, one of the Cinnamon developers.

Cinnamon 2.8.8 available for download now

Therefore, if you're using the Cinnamon desktop environment on Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" or any other GNU/Linux distribution, it is recommended that you update to today's Cinnamon 2.8.8 release as soon as possible, or as soon as the new version arrives in the software repositories.
