Almost one year ago, MMA fighter War Machine (Jon Koppenhaver) became a wanted man after he brutally attacked his then-girlfriend adult star Christy Mack in her own home. He spent almost 1 week on the run and was only caught when he tried to beat up another woman at the motel he was staying.

War Machine has been in prison since and is looking at many years behind bars if he’s found guilty of the 32 charges brought against him, including attempted rape, attempted murder and aggravated physical assault.

For one year, while going through physical recovery, Christy Mack has not said much on the record about the beating. She agreed to appear on the latest episode of HBO’s Real Sports, dealing with domestic violence among MMA fighters, and sit down with David Scott for an interview.

War Machine insists he’s a victim, blames Christy Mack

You can see footage from the show embedded below, *but please be advised that it contains mature language and graphic details that might be considered upsetting by some. The episode aired on HBO this week.

War Machine could not appear on the show to tell his side of the story on account of the fact that he’s in prison, but he sent Scott a lengthy letter, in which he sang the same tune as before: the real victim was him, not Mack.

Mack is just a woman who, yes, got beat up but not because she didn’t deserve it, who’s making money by ruining his reputation. War Machine insists that he was “ambushed” and attacked, so whatever injuries Mack sustained were in self-defense.

As for said injuries, if you check out the videos, you will get an idea of how severe they were, including smashed teeth, a perforated liver, broken ribs and nose. He also sawed off her hair with a knife and stabbed her, tried to rape her, punched and kicked her until she lost consciousness.

It took her many weeks until she could eat solids again, and even more until she could look at the reflection in the mirror and see a face that she recognized. Mack has had extensive plastic surgery and dental work, and she’s become more involved in raising awareness on the issue of domestic violence.

The official story

According to the police records for that night in August 2014, War Machine barged into Mack’s home and found her in her bedroom with another man. There was nothing inappropriate going on, but he’s always been a very violent and temperamental man, so he jumped to the conclusion that she had already replaced him.

War Machine and Christy had actually broken up a couple of months before, but the split wasn’t definitive yet and he still had the keys to her home.

He beat up the guy and then he proceeded to do the same to the woman he claimed belonged to him, and him only. She managed to escape by running out of the house and to a neighbor, who called the police.

War Machine went on the run while Mack was rushed to the hospital. He continued to tweet after news broke, claiming that he was innocent and had only fled the scene because he knew the cops would never be “fair” to him. He had served time in jail for assault before, so he had a track record.

Mack would later reveal that War Machine turned violent about 4 months into their relationship, saying she never left him because she loved him and, at the same time, feared for her safety and life.
