14 DAY TRIAL // Chipotle says its restaurants were infected with credit card stealing malware, admitting that most of its locations suffered from this infection. This comes as an update to the announcement made earlier this year that its customers might have been victims of the credit card hack.
The company took things a step further and also released a tool to help customers check whether the restaurant they visited was affected by this malware, much like Intercontinental did in April.
The company refused to reveal the exact number of restaurants that had been affected, but said most of its locations might have been involved. Therefore, if you're a frequent Chipotle customer, you may want to take extra precautions regarding your bank account.
"The malware searched for track data(which sometimes has cardholder name in addition to card number, expiration date, and internal verification code) read from the magnetic stripe of a payment card as it was being routed through the POS device. There is no indication that other customer information was affected," Chipotle said in a statement.
According to Chipotle's tool, restaurants were vulnerable in various time frames between March 24 and April 18, depending on when the infection reached them.
Chipotle wasn't the only one affected
Since Chipotle also operates the Pizzeria Locale chain, those restaurants were also affected by the hack.
The company is still looking into the situation and says that not all locations have been identified yet. However, the guide they've released is a good starting point as everyone can check the locations they visited in the aforementioned timeframe and can figure out if they're at risk or not.
Customers are advised to file a police report, contact the FTC, or place a fraud alert or security freeze on their bank accounts if they believe they could be affected.
