China’s Amperex Technology Limited has been in the attention of the media since the company was one of the battery suppliers for Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7. The original Note 7 smartphones sold in China came with batteries made by ATL and this was the main reason why the country wasn’t included in the first recall.

30% of the batteries inside original Galaxy Note 7 smartphones were made by ATL, while the rest were made by Samsung’s subsidiary company. After the first recall, Samsung decided to give up on its main battery supplier, Samsung SDI, and contract ATL for manufacturing batteries in replacement units.

Unfortunately, replacement Galaxy Note 7 smartphones still overheated and caught fire, which led to the smartphone’s discontinuation. Until the results of several ongoing investigations are made public, the reason for Note 7’s demise is still unknown.

Samsung is said to have contracted ATL for supplying batteries for the next quarter or two. It’s worth mentioning that ATL is also the main supplier of batteries for Apple’s latest devices, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

ATL announced a new battery that supports 40W quick charge

The Chinese company has just unveiled a new battery that has the capacity to support 40W quick charge and can be fully charged in just 34 minutes, according to GizmoChina. ATL will make the new battery available in 3 sizes, including one variant of 3,000mAh which can be charged to 80% in 17 minutes and 100% in 34 minutes.

But because of safety concerns, the company decided to make modifications that would slow down its charging capacity to 25 minutes for 80% and 40 to 50 minutes for 100%. It seems that the company is thus taking precautionary measures for batteries that will be made commercially available.

In addition, the Chinese company mentions that the battery’s life span won’t be affected by the fast charge feature, which means that the unit will still have a 500-charge life cycle like most batteries on the market. After 700 charge cycles, the battery’s capacity will still remain at 80%. Such batteries might be found in smartphones to be made available next year.
