CentOS maintainer Karanbir Singh announced the availability of updated Vagrant Box images for the CentOS Linux 7 and CentOS Linux 6 operating systems for the month of September 2016.

Tagged as version 1609.01, the new CentOS Linux Vagrant Box images are here with up-to-date components and GNU/Linux technologies, and consist of a minimal set of tools designed for sysadmins who are looking for an easy way to build a custom, barebone CentOS server on virtualized environments.

As mentioned before, the Vagrant Box 1609.01 images are now available for both CentOS Linux 6 and 7 distribution series, which are based on the freely distributed sources of the commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) operating system. An important part of CentOS, Vagrant is an open-source virtual development environment creation tool.

"Updated Vagrant box's are now available for CentOS Linux 7 and CentOS Linux 6 for x86_64. These are available, as in the past, for the Libvirt and the VirtualBox providers in Vagrant. We have also enabled the VMWare providers, for anyone using VMware's products for backing Vagrant on Linux, MacOS or Windows," said Karanbir Singh.

Here's what's new in CentOS Vagrant Box 1609.01

According to the release notes, the CentOS Vagrant Box 1609.01 images use the XFS file system for the CentOS Linux 7 build, which is the default file system when installing the operating system using the standard installation mediums, and a fix for an issue with the VMware Tools installation, which failed to complete successfully due to a dracut configuration bug.

The CentOS Linux 7 and CentOS Linux 6 64-bit (x86_64) Vagrant Box 1609.01 images also contain all the software versions released as of September 30, 2016, and they are now available for the Oracle VirtualBox and LibVirt virtualization software. While existing users can now upgrade their CentOS Vagrant boxes directly through Vagrant, newcomers can download them from Hashicorp’s Atlas.
