CD Projekt, the developer of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 game, is being blackmailed by an unknown party that’s threatening it with the release of stolen files.

CD Projekt is the studio behind The Witcher franchise, so it’s a very well-known name in the industry. The fact that some files pertaining to one of their upcoming games have leaked is troubling, but it’s also not something new to the industry.

Some of you might remember that, right before the launch of Half-Life 2, an unfinished build surfaced online. It was quite a blow for Valve, but Half-Life 2 turned out to be so good that it didn’t really matter.

From the looks of it, CD Projekt’s security was breached, and files related to their upcoming project Cyberpunk 2077 have been stolen. What’s different about this case is that the studio is being blackmailed with the release of said files. We’re now in a different era for leaked documents.

Taking the bullets out of the gun

The studio didn’t crack under the pressure of the blackmail and did the exact opposite. They've taken the bullets out of the blackmailers' “gun,” meaning that they've come forward to the community and explained that the files are no longer relevant to the current build of the game.

Since the studio is very much loved by the community for their incredibly good games and their stance on issues such as DRM, it most likely means that gamers will be taking their statement to heart and ignore the release of classified materials, even if they do come.

The worst outcome of this blackmail would be a delay in the production of the game or details about the story coming out ahead of time. In any case, CD Projekt has contacted the authorities, and they will most likely keep us up to date with further development.

Of course, the community can do its part too. If you happen to stumble upon these files online, in case they get leaked, make sure to ignore them. Supporting a great studio such as CD Projekt is really worth it.
