CD Projekt Red, the studio behind The Witcher 3 RPG, as well as many other titles, has suffered a data breach. The attacker is looking to get some money from the company, while holding stolen documents for ransom.

In a statement released by the company, CD Projekt Red says they will not bow to pressure and will not pay the ransom, no matter what threats are made.

"An unidentified individual or individuals have just informed us they are in possession of a few internal files belonging to CD PROJEKT RED. Among them are documents connected to early designs for the upcoming game, Cyberpunk 2077," the company said. "We will not be giving in to the demands of the individual or individuals that have contacted us, which might eventually lead to the files being published online. The appropriate legal authorities will be informed about the situation."

Old documents

According to the company, the documents the hackers got their hands on are old and largely unrepresentative of the current vision for the game. However, gamers that would like to properly enjoy playing Cyberpunk 2077 when it comes out are advised to avoid any content on the matter that did not come directly from CD Projekt Red.

The game has been highly anticipated, especially since work on it started back in 2012. The game took a back seat when the company decided to focus its efforts on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which was released back in 2015.

It is unclear who this group or individual is and just how much money they demanded of the company, but this seems to be a rather sad effort of blackmail. It does, however, seem to follow a trend that's been blooming among hackers who like to break into company servers, grabbing whatever they can before they are booted out and then trying to make some cash.
