Windows 10 Mobile is already available on new devices such as Lumia 950 and 950 XL, but everyone's waiting for Microsoft to make the upgrade available for Windows Phone handsets too, and now it looks like the release is imminent.

Carriers have started testing Windows 10 Mobile on Windows Phone devices in order to prepare for the public launch that is very likely to take place in stages. This means that, while some models will get it sometime this month, the rest will only receive the upgrade in February, according to information that emerged in late November.

Testing has already started in Australia

Vodafone Australia, for example, is now testing the first 5 models that are scheduled to receive the upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile, but no details on the release date are currently available.

WMPU spotted an update in Vodafone Australia's software update schedule, which reveals that Lumia 630, 640, 730, and 930 Windows 10 Mobile testing is already in progress while Lumia 640 XL is scheduled to be added to the list sometime in the near future.

As it turns out, this might actually be the first batch of phones to receive the upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile, at least in Australia, but the list can always change depending on how well the new operating system runs on Windows Phone devices.

According to Microsoft itself, Windows 10 Mobile is scheduled to go live in early December, and now the company is expected to make it available for Windows Phone devices sometime in the next couple of weeks.

The software giant has recently rolled out an updated build of Windows 10 Mobile for members of the Windows Insider program, and this is believed to be the RTM version that everyone will get very soon, but for the moment, Microsoft refuses to offer any information as to when this is projected to happen.
