The goal is to have a consistent UX across all devices

Canonical, through Steph Wilson, revealed earlier today, September 28, the fact that they are working on a new UI design for their acclaimed Ubuntu Linux computer operating system and Ubuntu Touch mobile OS.

In their continuous search for creating the best user experience, especially for newcomers to the Ubuntu Linux distribution, as well as for those who are brave enough to jump on the Ubuntu Phone bandwagon, Canonical decided that it was time to revamp the user interface of their operating systems completely.

At the moment, they started with baby steps, making several modifications to the first time setup screens for choosing a language, configuring the network, selecting a time zone, as well as to choose a lock screen option. During this process, the desktop installer was also modernized and simplified.

"We believe that the first impression matters, especially when it comes to introducing a new product to a user for the first time," says Steph Wilson. "Our aim is to delight the user from the moment they open the box, through to the setup wizard that will help them get started with their new phone."

The same visual experience across all devices

Canonical's ultimate goal is to provide the same user interface design for both their desktop and mobile operating systems, so that when new users try one of their products, they immediately fall in love with them. As such, they've posted a few nice screenshots that show the new UI design for the Ubuntu Installer and other interfaces.

They managed to define two types of screens, a primary one and a secondary one, as well as to establish an intuitive and harmonious animation between screens. On the Ubuntu Phone's UI, they removed most of the pop-up dialogs and transformed them intro full screens, as you can see from the screenshots attached below.

The new UI design will be implemented in both Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Phone operating systems through future updates. Unfortunately, Canonical does not mention when we will see the revamped interface, but we can guess that it will go live starting with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.
