Canonical's Snappy team, through Sergio Schvezov, announced the release of Snapcraft 2.1, the latest and most advanced Snappy creator tool for the Ubuntu Snappy Core series of operating systems.

Snapcraft 2.1 is a groundbreaking release that sports a huge number of new features, among which we can mention support for skills, such as migration-skill, the ability to upload your snap, support for running tests in a Xenial-based LXC, the addition of a mosquitto example, local source pull refactoring, and documentation updates.

Furthermore, starting with Snapcraft 2.1, there's no need to install all sorts of dependencies, such as Mercurial or GCC, when they're not needed. There's also support for non-standard makefile names in the Make plugin, $SNAPCRAFT_STAGE support for parts, and dozens of fixes that you can see in the attached changelog.

"2.1 is a risky and ground breaking release as it introduces skills, particularly use of the migration-skill. All the examples and relevant documentation have been updated. Given the constant movement in this rolling release, we expect a couple of iterations to get everything polished either on the snapcraft or Ubuntu Core side," said Sergio Schvezov, software engineer, Canonical.

Snapcraft 2.1 is ready for Xenial, work begins on Snapcraft 2.2

Snapcraft 2.1 is now available in the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, which is currently in development, so to update or install, just run the first two commands below in the Terminal app or any other terminal emulator. The third command can be used to install the examples package.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install snapcraft
sudo apt install snapcraft-examples
Now that the Snapcraft 2.1 release is out, the Snappy team at Canonical will start work on the next milestone, Snapcraft 2.2, which should bring even more cool features to the Snappy technologies in the Ubuntu Linux operating system, but more on that in the coming weeks.
