Linux 4.11-based kernel now available in Ubuntu 17.10 repos

Canonical has announced on Twitter that they have new Linux 4.11-based kernel packages ready for public testing in the repositories of the upcoming Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) operating system.

The news comes days after the Ubuntu Kernel team over at Canonical published their bi-weekly newsletter to inform the Ubuntu Linux community about the fact that Linux kernel 4.11 landed in the proposed channel of Ubuntu 17.10, and that they've prepared a new PPA (Personal Package Archive) to make testing easier.

We took a look at this PPA and it turns out it's used for building pre-release kernels for a bunch of Ubuntu Linux releases, including Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus), Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus), Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr), and, of course, Ubuntu 17.10. However, Canonical does not recommend you to subscribe to it.

Those of you brave enough to test the Linux kernel 4.11 packages in your Ubuntu operating systems can add the respective PPA by running the commands listed below in the Terminal app. The kernel packages appear to be based on the upstream Linux 4.11.3 kernel.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:canonical-kernel-team/ppa
sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

Linux kernel 4.12 is now in the unstable repos for Ubuntu 17.10

Meanwhile, the Ubuntu Kernel team is already working on rebasing the kernel packages of the upcoming Ubuntu 17.10 operating system, due for release on October 19, 2017, on the forthcoming Linux 4.12 kernel series, due in early July. The Linux 4.12 RC4 kernel appears to be available for testing in the unstable repos.

With this in mind, it looks to us like the final release of Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) will be shipping with the Linux 4.12 kernel by default, though Canonical didn't confirm this at the moment of writing this article. Later this month, on June 29, Ubuntu 17.10 will get a first Alpha milestone, but only for opt-in flavors.
