Never criticize Taylor for wanting to make money off music

Calvin Harris is nothing if not a knight in shining armor to his lady in distress Taylor Swift. The world-famous DJ got into a bitter Twitter exchange with Zayn Malik, ex-One Direction, over Taylor, whom Zayn dared to “insult” by pointing out that she was always looking for new ways to bank on her musical endeavors.

It all started with a tweet that has since been deleted, which was basically a retweet of a popular meme comparing Taylor and Miley Cyrus’ different approaches to music making. You can find the meme in the final tweet embedded below: it highlights the fact that Taylor is business-oriented, while Miley isn’t, saying she’s in it for the art and the fun.

Calvin Harris takes offense, rushes to the rescue

Zayn retweeted the meme, which immediately got a reaction from Calvin. For the record, Calvin and Taylor have been dating for a few months, so maybe he thought it behooved him to defend his lady when someone famous criticized her.

We can’t embed his first tweets to Zayn here because they contain profanity, but they read like this: “You’ve made your money? Cool… [expletive] the 99% of musicians who depend on these services to survive right? Yeah [expletive] em… If u don’t get what it means when a successful artist uses their celebrity to benefit every other musician and songwriter in the industry… stay out my [expletive]-ing mentions pls… While u kids are refresh voting teen choice awards there’s some poor [expletive]-er in a basement making your new favorite record trying to survive… Meaning… stay out of things you don’t understand.”

What Calvin is saying is that Taylor’s decision to challenge Apple’s decision not to pay artists for the 3 months it offered subscribers a free trial on Apple Music wasn’t about her but about newer, less famous artists.

So when Taylor said the things she’s quoted as saying in the meme, she wasn’t talking about lining her own pockets but about the poor dudes and dudettes who had no other choice but to obey Apple because they mattered too little to be taken into account, assuming they had the courage to say anything.

Taylor, in other words, wasn’t money-hungry, she was a hero who stood up for the less fortunate. She shouldn’t be criticized but praised. It’s Miley who deserves the criticism because she’s acting in a very selfish manner.

Zayn fights back

Obviously, while Calvin was ranting this way, Zayn was also engaging in the feud. As you can see below, he suggested that Calvin calm down or “them dentures fall out,” and he told him off for suggesting that he (Zayn) didn’t write his own lyrics.

The feud seems to have ended now, with Calvin telling Zayn that he had a great voice and wishing him the best of luck in the future.

He might have stomped on the brakes and prevented the spat from getting even nastier, but that doesn’t change the fact that he did, indeed, make a fool of himself for speaking out on what is held a universal truth in the blogosphere. Taylor really is more money-oriented than Miley and that’s not something to be ashamed of.

If it were, Taylor herself would have said something about it.
