14 DAY TRIAL // The Calibre eBook reader, editor, and library management software has been upgraded to version 2.17 and is now available for download. The developer has only implemented a couple of new features, but it's really worth the update if you are using this application to edit eBooks.
Calibre is mostly used as a converter or reader, but it's also capable of editing eBooks. This functionality was added only recently and it's been upgraded constantly. Almost all the versions since then had improvements for this feature and the current iteration only comes with changes for this particular option.
A new update is made available almost every week and the developer is always fixing and improving the app. Many of those changes are requested by the community, which is a sizable one. No real competition exists for Calibre, but that hasn't influenced the development cycle in any way. In fact, it's been getting better with each new release and it's only a matter of time until someone like Amazon offers to buy it.
Calibre gets a shiny new tool
Most of the updates made to Calibre usually bring fixes, but not all of them. New features are introduced from time to time and the same can be said about the current version. If you are editing eBooks, then it's important to update as soon as possible.
"A new reports tool that shows a summary of files, images, words, characters and styles used in the book. The reports tool is a great way to get an overview of the different parts of your book. Every line in the report is hot-linked, double clicking it jumps to the places in the book where that item is used," reads the official changelog.
Also, the new "Manage Snippets" action can now be placed in the toolbar, a couple of regressions have been corrected, and a few news sources have been added.
