On October 31, 2016, people celebrated Halloween all over the world, and it looks like fans of the popular, free, open-source, and cross-platform Calibre ebook management software had a reason to party all night long as well.

Ten years ago, on October 31, 2006, the first ever version of Calibre was announced by developer Kovid Goyal, but under the name of libprs500, which was inspired by Sony's first e-ink device, the PRS-500 Portable Reader System. Two years later, around 2008, it was time for a change, and libprs500 became Calibre.

Many years later, Calibre has become the most popular and powerful ebook library management software you can install on your personal computer, no matter if it's a Mac, Linux or Windows PC. And to celebrate its 10th anniversary, the developer released today the Calibre 2.71 update with a brand new set of icons.

"To celebrate calibre turning ten, calibre now has a brand new set of icons designed from scratch. Note that you can choose between many different icon sets for calibre, including the original icons, from Preferences->Look & Feel->Choose icon theme," said Kovid Goyal in today's announcement for Calibre 2.71.

Bug fixes and other new features

The Calibre 2.71 maintenance release not only celebrates the project's 10th anniversary with a brand new icon set but also updates the Book Details panel with a new "Copy all" action that has been implemented in the right-click menu. Also, it addresses a bunch of issues reported by users since the Calibre 2.70 version.

Lastly, Calibre 2.71 updates the Financial Times, LWN Weekly, MIT Technology Review, and The Hindu news sources. You can download Calibre 2.71 for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now via our website and update your Calibre 2.70 or previous version. Happy 10th birthday, Calibre!
