Calibre developer Kovid Goyal announced today, February 10, 2017, the immediate availability for download of the Calibre 2.79 open-source ebook library management software for all supported platforms.

Calibre 2.79 is here two weeks after the release of version 2.78, which introduced support for the newest Kobo firmware and many bug fixes. It's also a small release that only introduces a pop-up message to inform users when an Android device is connected.

The user will then need to interact with the informational pop-up message to allow the respective Android device to work with Calibre by simply clicking on the Allow button. This has been currently implemented only for Linux-based operating systems and Mac OS X.

The list of new features implemented in Calibre 2.79 continues with the ability to make opened ebooks to also be displayed in the jump lists of the standalone editor and viewer components (Windows only), and for easy reference, it makes the conversion feature log options that are different from the defaults.

Bug fixes, updated news sources

Several bugs reported by users since Calibre 2.78 or previous versions have been addressed in Calibre 2.79. Among these, we can mention a regression in the conversion functionality that could have broken conversion of ebooks in the EPUB format when the "Remove first image" option was used.

There are also fixes for errors with the Windows MTP driver that did report enumerated device storage during detection of devices, a crash that occurred when attempting to generate covers on GNU/Linux platforms with Qt 5.8 installed, as well as an issue with the Get Books feature, whose jobs and result lists weren't populated if Qt 5.8 was installed.

Other than that, Calibre 2.79 improves the import rules in the icon and coloring rules dialog to be able to activate the "Apply" button, updates the Kobo plugin to be aware of the latest Kodo website changes for the Get Books feature, and enhances the Tag Browser component to increase the series number when books are dragged and dropped onto them.

The LA Times, NYTimes, New Yorker, The Atlantic, Wall Street Journal, The Straits Times, Strange Horizons, and Bangkok Post news sources have been improved, and you can download the binary and source files of Calibre 2.79 right now from our website, for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
