14 DAY TRIAL // Today, June 17, 2016, Calibre developer Kovid Goyal has proudly announced the release and general availability of the Calibre 2.59 update of the open-source and cross-platform ebook library management software.
Calibre 2.59 arrives after only one week after the debut of Calibre 2.58, the previous point release that added compatibility with the latest Qt 5.x technologies (Qt 5.5 or later) on the Ubuntu Linux operating systems. And it looks like it introduces several improvements to the Amazon Metadata Download functionality.
The first one is the ability to automatically download the entire series information as soon as amazon.com makes it available. The second new feature for Calibre's Amazon Metadata Download support is the capacity to detect common patterns of embedding the name of the series after the title, and then automatically deleting it.
EPUB 3 support improvements, many bug fixes
Among other interesting new features implemented in Calibre 2.59 is support for EPUB 3 files on the built-in Table of Contents (ToC) tool, which will automatically generate EPUB 3's navigation document and the NCX ToC when editing such files, for backward compatibility, of course.
Furthermore, Calibre's EPUB Input feature is now capable of reading an EPUB 3's ToC that doesn't specify a fallback NCX Table of Contents. When trying to set a cover image, the software now adds a new cover image to EPUB files that don't have any metadata cover image defined by default, no longer aborting the operation.
Lastly, Calibre 2.59 ships today for all supported platforms with improvements to the Technology Review (DE) news sources, as well as many bug fixes for the most annoying problems reported by users since Calibre 2.58, which you can see in the changelog attached.
