Microsoft expected to fix it with cumulative update

A bug in Windows 10 Redstone 4 RTM build (17134) causes the Settings app to crash when users attempt to change the default apps on their systems.

Right now, the bug appears to be quite widespread, though it seems like not everyone is experiencing it. We were able to reproduce the issue on two different systems running Windows 10 build 17134. The issue doesn’t seem to exist in RS5 builds released to users in the Skip Ahead ring.

The Settings app crashes when launching the Settings app and navigating to Apps > Default apps > Set defaults by app, and no workaround seems to be making any difference for now. Rebooting the system several times could be a way to deal with this issue, according to one reddit user who posted in this thread.

Several users claimed the problem also exists on Windows 10 build 17133.1, which was the original RTM build that shipped to all rings as part of the Windows Insider program. This build was later replaced by 17134 after Microsoft discovered a blocking bug possibly causing BSODs on systems that installed it.

Windows 10 April 2018 Update

Microsoft is projected to begin the public rollout of Windows 10 Redstone 4 by the end of the month, but the company is yet to release an official announcement on the date and the name of the update.

While previous evidence indicated that Redstone 4 could launch as Spring Creators Update, it now seems like Microsoft will instead use the Windows 10 April 2018 Update moniker for the production version. This means there’s a good chance the rollout will indeed begin this month, as originally projected.

This bug, together with others that are probably less widespread, are expected to be fixed before the public rollout begins. A cumulative update to resolve all these issues is also projected to be published on day one.
