14 DAY TRIAL // We had the pleasure of reporting the other day about the availability of the Linux 4.6.4 kernel for all GNU/Linux operating systems, as well as the Budgie 10.2.6 desktop environment for Solus, Fedora 22/23, and openSUSE Leap/Tumbleweed distros.
While it's too early for many GNU/Linux distributions to update to Linux kernel 4.6.4, which is now the most advanced stable kernel version available, Arne Exton informed us earlier about the availability of a custom compiler, Linux 4.6.4 kernel package for 64-bit Slackware-based OSes, including Zenwalk, Slax, and SlackEX.
Arch Linux users are still waiting for Linux kernel 4.6.4 to arrive in the main stable repos (it's in the Testing repository at the moment of writing this article), but it looks like users of the Debian-based SparkyLinux distribution can now update to Linux 4.6.4 using the following instructions.
First, make sure that you are using the "unstable" repository before running the following command for your hardware architecture. If you don't know how to activate it, please take a look at http://sparkylinux.org/wiki/doku.php/repository before attempting to install the latest kernel.
For 64-bit:
sudo apt-get install linux-image-sparky-amd64
For 32-bit non-PAE:
sudo apt-get install linux-image-sparky-686
For 32-bit PAE:
sudo apt-get install linux-image-sparky-686-pae
Here's how to install Budgie Desktop 10.2.6 on SparkyLinux
Make sure that you reboot your system after installing the new kernel version. As a bonus, the skillful SparkyLinux developers have also managed to add the newly released Budgie 10.2.6. desktop environment from the Solus Project, and you can install it right now, or update your current version, using the set of commands listed below.
Upgrading to Budgie Desktop 10.2.6:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Installing Budgie Desktop 10.2.6:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install budgie-desktop
