BlackBerry Mercury will be officially unveiled on February 25. The smartphone has already been showcased earlier this month at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017, but no details about its specifications have been shared with the press yet.

Although we're bound to find more about the BlackBerry Mercury, or whatever its name, next month, it looks like someone leaked some interesting information about the smartphone.

Before going into details, let's set up the background. As some of you have probably read or heard, the Pixel phones have some of the best cameras on the market.

Both the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones pack Sony sensors inside their shooters, as well as some advanced processing features that make them perfect shooters.

Well, it appears that another smartphone will be packing the Sony sensor found inside the Pixels, though this doesn't guarantee that it will be as good as Google's smartphones when it comes to camera.

The front camera sensor will be provided by two suppliers

According to Roland Quandt, BlackBerry Mercury will have a 12-megapixel camera on the back, which will include a Sony IMX367 sensor that can capture 4K videos, the same that's inside the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones.

Also, in the front, the Mercury is supposed to feature a secondary 8-megapixel camera that will embed Samsung S5K4H8 or Omnivision OV8856 sensor. The sensor size is 1.2μm in both cases and the camera can shoot full HD (1080p) videos at 30fps.

Even though the information seems meant to increase the hype around the last BlackBerry smartphone made by the Canadian company, as mentioned earlier, there's no guarantee that the Mercury will be a great photo shooter.

It remains to be seen what other nice surprises BlackBerry and TCL have in store for us, but one thing is sure, the Mercury will not be getting Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 chip. But we can hope for a Snapdragon 821 CPU, right?
