Android or Blackberry? That is the question

BlackBerry OS dropped in fifth place as the most used mobile platform on the market after Samsung Z1 spearheaded Tizen OS on number four spot.

But that was to be expected since Tizen OS is aimed at a budget-friendly market where companies are selling the most, whereas BlackBerry doesn't have any low-cost smartphones that could compete with Android, Windows Phone or Tizen.

Not to mention that the latest smartphone launched by BlackBerry won't bring the Canadian additional market share for its BlackBerry 10 OS since the PRIV is powered by Android platform.

The PRIV was supposed to be the last smartphone launched by BlackBerry if sales hadn't gone so well. However, John Chen, the company's CEO, has just confirmed in an interview with Fox Business that BlackBerry has “a range of exciting products after this.”

Unfortunately, Chen did not mention if the upcoming smartphones would be in the same family as PRIV or whether or not they would be powered by Android OS.

The PRIV might be BlackBerry's “swan song”

According to John Chen, if BlackBerry PRIV is receptive to the younger audience, and his company has every reason to believe that it will be successful, then they will be able to rebuild their phone business.

He also hopes that BlackBerry will be able to surpass the 1% market share in the coming months, thanks to the PRIV sales and possible new products after the slider.

Since BlackBerry PRIV is available in the United States at AT&T only, John Chen has mentioned that his company is open to discussing with Verizon and Sprint the opportunity of launching the Android smartphones on these networks too.

In fact, Verizon has already confirmed that it will carry the BlackBerry PRIV, but no details on availability and price options have been shared yet.
