Black Lab Software's Roberto J. Dohnert has informed Softpedia today about the immediate availability for download of the Black Lab Linux Weekly 258 ISO snapshot of the Ubuntu-based distribution.

Coming two weeks after the previous update because of the Easter holidays, Black Lab Linux Weekly 258 is the first to switch to the GNOME 3 desktop environment, leaving Xfce and MATE in the rear view mirror, as alternatives for those who want to use them (you can choose either session directly from the login manager).

"Today we are releasing Weekly 258. GNOME 3 will be our default desktop going forward. We will still supply XFCE and Mate as alternative desktops. All of our weeklies going forward will be based on GNOME 3," said Roberto J. Dohnert, CEO of Black Lab Software.

Black Lab Linux is now powered by Linux kernel 4.8

Another novelty implemented in the Black Lab Linux Weekly 258 ISO snapshot is the use of the Linux 4.8 kernel from the Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, which borrows the kernel packages of Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak). The kernel 4.8.0-46 version is used in this release by default.

Other updated components include bind9-host, dnsmasq-base, dnsutils, gir1.2-javascriptcoregtk-4.0, gir1.2-webkit2-4.0, libbind9-140, libdns-export162, libdns162, libisc-export160, libisc160, libisccc140, libisccfg140, libjavascriptcoregtk-4.0-18, liblwres141, libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37, and libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37-gtk2.

Last but not least, Black Lab Linux Weekly 258 comes with Canonical Partners software repository enabled by default, with the express permission from Canonical. The repos contain software packaged by Canonical for their partners, but are freely available to any Ubuntu user out there.

You can download the Black Lab Linux Weekly 258 Live ISO image right now if you want to install or try the operating system on your computer. However, please try to keep in mind that these Weekly snapshots of Black Lab Linux are considered development releases, not to be used on production systems.
