Black Lab Software CEO Roberto J. Dohnert informed us today about some of the latest hardware and software changes happening for the Ubuntu-based Black Lab Linux operating system.

After spending the last several months streamlining business and software developments, Black Lab Software/PC/OpenSystems LLC decided that it was time to make the Black Lab Enterprise Linux OS free for download again, after the company announced last year that it went commercial due to lack of funding. The latest release, Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11, is now available for download.

The same announcement also disappointed netOS users, as they were informed that their beloved operating system would be discontinued. That is not the case anymore, as today we've been informed that netOS is becoming Black Lab Enterprise Linux and that users won't have to wait 30 days to download the latest release for free. Both commercial and free editions are to be released on the same day from now on.

"Black Lab Enterprise Linux and its variants are now free to download for a self-support package. Users will get all the software and features that are bundled with Black Lab Enterprise Linux but they are limited to support through forums and community resources only," said Dohnert. "We will no longer have a 30 day waiting period for the download editions of Black Lab Enterprise Linux or Black Lab Linux."

Acer deal is over,  Black Lab Enterprise Linux will be deployed on Dell systems

On the hardware side of things, Black Lab Software has announced today that their Acer deal is now officially over and that, from now on, they'll start shipping Black Lab Enterprise Linux on Dell systems as Dell appears to have a much more robust presence in both the education (schools, universities, etc.) and enterprise environments, which are also the target of the Linux company.

If you choose to purchase a Linux computer from Black Lab Software, Black Lab Enterprise Linux will be the default operating system, but you'll also be able to have it shipped with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Enterprise Linux, or Oracle Unbreakable Linux. A 4-year warranty is provided for all desktop PCs pre-loaded with Black Lab Enterprise Linux, and a 3-year warranty for laptops.
