PC/OpenSystems LLC's CEO Roberto J. Dohnert is informing us today on the immediate availability of the third beta release of the upcoming Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11.5 operating system.

If you're wondering, there weren't any other betas released for the Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11.5 operating system, so the Beta 3 release comes as a surprise to us all. It rebases the OS on Canonical's latest Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system and brings various performance improvements.

For example, the driver capabilities have been increased through the inclusion of a new Linux kernel, and the operating system now offers much better performance on various devices. However, this beta release still has some known issues, especially with Microsoft Surface computers, as noted in the release announcement.

Here's what's included in Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11.5 Beta 3

Powered by Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS' Linux 4.10.0-38 kernel and X.Org Server 1.18 display server, Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11.5 Beta 3 includes popular applications like the LibreOffice 5.4 office suite and Chromium 62 web browser, offering users the same functionality as Googles' Chrome OS operating system for Chromebooks.

"With this release, we have made several enhancements to the Black Lab Enterprise Linux system. We have also worked on web app capability, and with the Chromium web browser you now have the same functionality as Chrome OS, as well as the ability to use standard Linux applications," said Roberto J. Dohnert.

Also included are the Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Calligra office suite, Audacious music player, Parole Media Player, Skype VoIP client, Nitroshare network file transfer tool, Synergy mouse and keyboard sharing software, Samba file and printing sharing framework, as well as Recoll digital library server.

Ice SSB is installed as well if you want to install your favorite web browser when using Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11.5, which uses the lightweight Xfce desktop environment. You can download Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11.5 Beta 3 right now from our website if you want to take it for a test drive, but keep in mind that it's a pre-release version, not suitable for any production use.
