Bitcoin has just reached a new record as it surpassed the $15,000 threshold only a few minutes ago after another huge growth of 14.9% on Thursday alone.

The cryptocurrency is now priced at $15,242.99, up from no less than $1,000 in January this year, bringing total market capitalization to no less than $256 billion.

The current price of Bitcoin varies just a little bit depending on tracker, with Bing (which uses data from Coinbase) listing 1 Bitcoin as $15,284, while Google says it’s worth $15,624. Bitcoin posted a growth of no less than 14.9% on Thursday and 50% in the first week of December.

Bitcoin hack

While only sky seems to be the limit now for Bitcoin, news of surpassing the $15,000 mark comes only a few hours after cryptocurrency mining platform NiceHash got hacked, with attackers running away with no less than $60 million.

NiceHash admitted in a press release that its payment system was breached and the contents of the wallet got stolen, but couldn’t provide an estimate as to how many Bitcoin were lost.

The service has been taken offline as an investigation is under way, both by the administrators, and by law enforcement, as the incident has been reported to the police.

“We are currently investigating the nature of the incident and, as a result, we are stopping all operations for the next 24 hours,” NiceHash said. “We understand that you will have a lot of questions, and we ask for patience and understanding while we investigate the causes and find the appropriate solutions for the future of the service. We will endeavour to update you at regular intervals.”

NiceHash recommended members to change their passwords, promising to return with more updates as the investigation advances and more information is collected on the breach.
