14 DAY TRIAL // Birds Linux creator Francesco Milesi has informed Softpedia today, May 24, 2016, about the immediate availability of a major update to his open-source computer operating system, Birds Linux 8.0.
Birds Linux 8.0 has been in development for the past three months, during which the developer has managed to update most of the core components to their latest versions. For example, the distribution is now powered by a kernel from the Linux 4.5 series and includes the LibreOffice 5.1.2 office suite.
It also looks like today's Birds Linux 8.0 release switches from the Xfce 4.12 desktop environment, which was used in the previous version of the OS, to the GNOME 3 desktop. It thus provided users with the GNOME 3.18.4 packages, along with the latest applications designed for students, including Budgie Calc, Budgie Zero, Wren Matrix, and Hoopoe.

As mentioned before, there are various updated components included in Birds Linux 8.0, and among the most notable ones are VLC Media Player 2.2.2, GIMP 2.8.14-r1, Empathy 3.12.11, Google Chrome 50.0.2661.94, Tor Browser 5.5.5, QCAD 3.14.3, as well as DrJava 20140826-r5761.
Of course, all the in-house built applications have received new versions as well, and Birds Linux 8.0 ships with Budgie Calc 6.1 and Budgie Zero 1.0 for studying rational functions, Wren Matrix 2.0 for studying matrices, Hoopoe 1.0 for studying linear, parabolic, and exponential interpolation, and pH Calc 1.0 for calculating pH.
Additionally, AuLi 1.0 is also available for calculating the potential of an electrolytic cell, Titableau 0.1 for solving linear optimization problems, and, of course, BirdsApp 2.0 GUI for installing all of these awesome Birds Linux applications. The Kingfisher 1.0 Java library is pre-installed as well.
