Francesco Milesi, the creator of the Birds Linux distribution, has informed Softpedia today, May 3, 2017, about the immediate availability of a new version of his open-source operating system for students, Birds Linux 10.0.

It's been a while since we last heard from the Birds Linux project, but it looks like it's still being developed for educational purposes, and today's Birds Linux 10.0 release appears to be a major one that updates most of the pre-installed core components and applications to their latest versions.

First things first, the distro is now powered by a kernel from the latest Linux 4.10 series, version 4.10.11 at the moment of release, and the GNOME desktop environment was updated to the last point release of the GNOME 3.22 Stack. Unfortunately, the developer didn't have the time to upgrade to GNOME 3.24 yet.

Here's what's new in Birds Linux 10.0

The developer informs us that Birds Linux 10.0 is shipping with numerous up-to-date apps, and among the most popular ones we can mention the Google Chrome 58.0.3029.81 and TOR Browser 6.5.2 web browsers, the LibreOffice 5.2.6.2 office suite, GIMP 2.9.4 image editor, and Dr Java Beta-20160913-225446 IDE.

For those interested in computer-aided design, Birds Linux 10.0 includes both the QCAD 3.16.7 and FidoCadJ 0.24.5 applications, which are accompanied by various in-house built tools like Titableau 0.2 for solving linear optimization problems and Rodebin 1.0 for solving linear ODEs using Laplace transform.

Moreover, Hoopoe 1.1 is included as well for studying linear, exponential, parabolic, and Lagrange interpolation, Alcedo for root-finding, integration and interpolation of rational and transcendental functions, Wren Matrix 2.2 for studying vector bases and square matrices, as well as Python Matplotlib 2D plotting library.

Birds Linux 10.0 updates the Kingfisher Java library to version 3.0, which is used by most of the tools mentioned above, and adds Totem 3.22.1 and Pitivi 0.96 for various multimedia needs.
