Apple will skip the iPhone 7s model completely

The new 2017 iPhones will be unveiled next week as part of a press conference at the Apple Park, and while the September 12 has already been confirmed, little has been said about the name of the devices.

Just as expected, the rumor mill is full of contradictory information regarding the way the new iPhone models could be called, including variations like iPhone 8, iPhone X, and iPhone Edition. If these rumors are true, then Apple could launch an anniversary model alongside what everyone has until now called the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, two more subtly-improved devices that share the look of the existing iPhone 7 generation.

But a leaked final build of iOS 11, which will also power the new iPhones, finally puts an end to all the mystery, confirming the naming of the devices going live next week.

Hello, iPhone X

Apple’s 2017 lineup will consist of three models, namely the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X. The iPhone 8 will be the 4.7-inch device that will serve as a refresh of the iPhone 7, while the iPhone 8 Plus will be the facelifted iPhone 7 Plus. Lastly, the iPhone X will be the eagerly anticipated 10th anniversary model that’s generating all the excitement right now.

In other words, Apple will completely skip the iPhone 7s series, and it more or less makes sense. First of all, launching the anniversary model as iPhone 8 and marketing the other 2 devices as part of the 7s lineup would certainly have a big impact on sales, so Apple made a compromise and jumped straight to a whole new generation to avoid any confusion.

The iPhone 8 and the 8 Plus will look similar to the existing models, but will come with a glass body allowing for wireless charging. Touch ID will be retained and the facial recognition system from the iPhone X won’t be available.

Sales of the new models are expected to begin on September 22, one week after Apple starts taking pre-orders on September 15.
