AV-TEST runs new test to determine best Mac security apps

Security institute AV-TEST has conducted a new research, this time trying to determine the best security solutions for macOS Sierra, which was released by Apple earlier this year.

The research involved a total of 12 security products, 3 of which were offered for free, and all of them obviously fully updated and running the latest versions released by the developing companies.

4 products getting the top score

A total of four different security solutions obtained the maximum score after offering a 100 percent detection rate: AVG Antivirus, Bitdefender Antivirus, SentinelOne, and Sophos Home.

Avast Mac Security 2015, Intego Mac Internet Security X9, Kaspersky Internet Security, and Symantec Norton Security were next with 96.8 percent.

Only two products failed the tests, namely F-Secure SAFE and Webroot SecureAnywhere, which achieved a detection rate of only 64.5 percent and 22.6 percent, respectively.

AV-TEST says most of the products offered only 1 percent additional system load, which means that they don’t slow down computers too much, even though they offer extra protection.

A test that wasn’t rated tried to determine whether the solutions included in this research were also able to detect Windows malware, as AV-TEST says that cybercriminals might not necessarily target macOS systems, but the networks they are part off.

“Although it is not their primary task, the applications delivered strong detection performance: Bitdefender identified and removed even 100 percent of the more than 7,000 Windows malware samples. The additional packages from Avast, ESET, Sentinel, Kaspersky Lab and AVG had high detection rates of 99.5 to 99.9 % of Windows malware,” the test shows.

At the same time, AV-TEST explains that there were no false positives during the research, and all of them delivered perfect performance.

And last but not least, there was one final test trying to determine detection of potentially unwanted applications, with the security solution developed by Kaspersky Lab getting the maximum score.
