14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft Edge is the new default browser in Windows 10 and the software giant uses every little occasion to praise it, emphasizing even in notifications displayed on the desktop that Google Chrome is slower and less secure.
Furthermore, Microsoft has published benchmarks to show that Edge provides longer battery life than Google Chrome and Firefox, which at this point are considered to be its two main rivals.
And while these tests have been received with much excitement by the Microsoft community, a new series of benchmarks published on YouTube channel Linus Tech Tips indicates that the Redmond-based tech giant doesn’t say the whole truth when comparing Edge to Google Chrome and Firefox.
Basically, the new benchmark was based on 2 different tests, one of which used Microsoft’s own methodology to see whether Edge is indeed more power-efficient than its rivals. The second one involved simulated web usage performed identically on all browsers.
Chrome the most energy-efficient browser
Neither test ends well for Microsoft. The one that is based on the company’s own methodology proves that Chrome is more energy-efficient than Edge, which raises some questions as to how the company performed the benchmark, while the other own returns similar results.
On the other hand, this research shows that the Windows 10 Creators Update indeed improved Edge performance in all regards and brought the company’s Internet Explorer replacement closer to rivals, but there’s still a lot of work to do to beat them in terms of performance and power usage.
The bigger problem is that Microsoft Edge is getting updates only rarely, as Microsoft rolls out new features and improvements when new OS versions are ready. This happens twice a year, as per the company’s release schedule, so as compared to rivals, Edge is often lagging behind in terms of updates.
The new OS version projected to launch is Windows 10 Falls Creators Update due in September, so Edge will get another large batch of tweaks in a few months.
