This was her first live performance after Lyme diagnosis

Avril Lavigne has been absent from the spotlight for almost a year, but she made her return to the spotlight in spectacular fashion: by performing live at the Special Olympics 2015 in Los Angeles over the weekend.

She sang “Fly,” a track she’d written specifically for this occasion. You can hear it below, in the video of the opening of the Games.

Avril had been sick for a few months before doctors finally figured out what was wrong with her: she had contracted Lyme disease, from a tick bite, she recalled in a recent interview with ABC’s Good Morning America.

Recovery was very slow, forcing Avril to spend even more time away from her fans and the recording studio. To this day, she is still under treatment and she still has days when she’s not feeling well, but as per her own words, she’s taking things one day at a time.

She spoke out to GMA about her horrible experience with Lyme to let others in a similar situation know that there was a light at the end of the tunnel.

“Lyme disease does exist,” she said, recalling the many months when she was told by doctors she was “crazy” because there was nothing wrong with her physically. “And you can get better. I think for me it’s like a second chance at life. I want to go out there and truly do what I love. I’m excited for life after this.”
